AiCuris expands its Management with Prof. Dr. Hubert Trübel joining as Chief Medical Officer and the Appointment of Dr. Tamara Pfaff, Head of Preclinical Development, to the Management Team

• Hubert Trübel succeeds Dr. Manickam Rangaraju as CMO and Head of Clinical Development
• As CMO, Prof. Trübel will be responsible for the entire clinical pipeline including AiCuris’ main programs, Pritelivir, planned to enter a pivotal Phase 3 trial in 2021 for the treatment of acyclovir-resistant HSV infections and AIC649, a broad-acting immunmodulator currently being tested against SARS-CoV-2
• In her new position, Dr. Tamara Pfaff will represent all preclinical activities within the management team and strengthen these activities in AiCuris’ R&D organisation

 WUPPERTAL, Germany, March 30, 2021 - AiCuris, a leading company in the discovery and development of drugs against infectious diseases, today announced that Prof. Hubert Trübel joined AiCuris as Head of Clinical Development and Chief Medical Officer. In addition, the Head of Preclinical Development, Dr. Tamara Pfaff, was also appointed to the management team effective April 1, 2021.

Prof. Trübel brings with him more than 20 years of experience in academia and the pharmaceutical industry with an extensive track record in the management of international clinical development across a variety of treatment areas. As CMO, he will be responsible for the entire AiCuris clinical development pipeline including the Company’s main programs Pritelivir and AIC649. Pritelivir is planned to enter a pivotal Phase 3 trial in 2021 for the treatment of immunocompromised patients whose HSV infections have become resistant to acyclovir. With AIC649 the focus will be on the exploitation of the full potential of this immune modulator, currently being investigated for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2.

Prof. Trübel succeeds Dr. Manickam Rangaraju, who plans to retire after serving many years as AiCuris’ CMO. Based on his deep and sound knowledge in anti-infective indications, Dr. Rangaraju was  instrumental over the years in building up and supporting our successful development pipeline. We are glad that Dr. Rangaraju will continue to serve as AiCuris’ Senior Clinical Consultant further supporting the Company with his decades of R&D experience in the field of anti-infectives.

In addition, AiCuris appoints Dr. Tamara Pfaff, Head of Preclinical Development to the management team. In her role, she will be responsible for all preclinical development activities of current AiCuris assets including the due diligence of future in-licensing opportunities.

Before coming to AiCuris, Prof. Trübel was Senior Vice President & Head of “Translational Medicine” at Bayer Pharma Research & Development. Previosly, amongst others he held various leading positions throughout his 12 year career at Bayer AG, including Vice President & Head of “Experimental Medicine Cardiovascular/Hematolgy.” Prof. Trübel habilitated in 2006 at the private University of Witten/Herdecke, where he also was member of the faculty board from 2004 to 2008. He is a member of the German Socienty of Cardiology (DGK) and of the Ethics Committee at the University of Witten/Herdecke. Prof. Trübel earened his M.D. from the University of Mainz, Germany and an MBA from the University of Illinois, U.S.A.

Dr. Pfaff joined AiCuris in 2010 as Head of Preclinical Drug Safety and steadily increased her responsibilities. She became Senior Director in 2018 and was responsible for all preclinical safety aspects of the AiCuris portfolio. In 2020, she became Head of Preclinical Development. Dr. Pfaff started her industrial career in 2004 as Head of Laboratory Preclinical Development in the Global Research and Development department of Gruenenthal GmbH and was promoted to International Preclinical Project Leader in 2009. Dr. Pfaff is a trained veterinarian and in addition holds a master’s degree in applied toxicology. She is a German board certified pathologist and recognized as an Eurotox-registered toxicologist. Dr. Pfaff studied at the Universities of Gießen and Surrey, Guildford (UK).

März 2021 - AiCuris Anti-infective Cures GmbH, ein führendes Unternehmen in der Erforschung und Entwicklung von Arzneimitteln gegen Infektionskrankheiten, gab heute die Ernennung von Prof. Hubert Trübel als Chief Medical Officer und die Berufung von Dr.Tamara Pfaff, Head of Preclinical Development, zum 1. April 2021 in das Management Team bekannt.

Prof. Trübel bringt mehr als 20 Jahre Erfahrung aus der Wissenschaft und der Pharmaindustrie mit ins Unternehmen und verfügt über eine beeindruckende Erfolgsbilanz im Management internationaler klinischer Entwicklungsstudien in einer Vielzahl von Indikationen. Als CMO wird er für die gesamte klinische Entwicklungspipeline von AiCuris verantwortlich sein, einschließlich der Hauptprogramme des Unternehmens, Pritelivir und AIC649. Der Start einer pivotalen Phase-3-Studie mit Pritelivir zur Behandlung von HSV-Infektionen, die gegen Aciclovir resistent geworden sind, ist für 2021 geplant. Bei AIC649 liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Ausschöpfung des vollen Potenzials dieses Immunmodulators, der derzeit für die Behandlung von SARS-CoV-2 untersucht wird.

Prof. Trübel tritt die Nachfolge von Dr. Manickam Rangaraju an, der nach langjähriger Tätigkeit als CMO von AiCuris in den Ruhestand wechselt. Basierend auf seinem tiefen und fundierten Wissen im Indikationsbereich Antiinfektiva war Dr. Rangaraju über die Jahre maßgeblich am Aufbau und der Unterstützung der erfolgreichen Entwicklungspipeline beteiligt. Dr. Rangaraju wird das Unternehmen auch weiterhin als Senior Clinical Consultant von AiCuris mit seiner jahrzehntelangen F&E-Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der Antiinfektiva unterstützen.

Darüber hinaus beruft AiCuris Dr. Tamara Pfaff, Leiterin der Präklinischen Entwicklung in das AiCuris Management Team. In ihrer Funktion wird sie für alle präklinischen Entwicklungsaktivitäten der aktuellen AiCuris-Pipeline und Bewertung zukünftiger Einlizenzierungsoptionen verantwortlich sein.

Bevor Prof. Trübel zu AiCuris kam, war er seit 2018 Senior Vice President & Head of “Translational Medicine” (Translationale Medizin) bei Bayer Pharma Research & Development. Zuvor hatte er während seiner 12-jährigen Karriere bei der Bayer AG verschiedene Führungspositionen inne, darunter Vice President & Head of Experimental Medicine Cardiovascular/Hematolgy (Experimentelle Medizin im Bereich Herz-Kreislauf/Hämatologie). Prof. Trübel habilitierte 2006 an der privaten Universität Witten/Herdecke, wo er von 2004 bis 2008 auch Mitglied des Fakultätsrates war. Er ist Mitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kardiologie (DGK) und der Ethikkommission der Universität Witten/Herdecke. Prof. Trübel studierte Medizin an der Universität Mainz und absolvierte seinen Master of Business Administration (MBA) an der Universität von Illinois, USA.

Dr. Pfaff kam 2010 als Leiterin der präklinischen Arzneimittelsicherheit zu AiCuris und baute ihre Verantwortung stetig aus. Seit 2018 war sie als Senior Director für alle präklinischen Sicherheitsaspekte des AiCuris-Portfolios verantwortlich. 2020 wurde sie Leiterin der gesamten Präklinischen Entwicklung. Dr. Pfaff begann ihre industrielle Karriere 2004 als Laborleiterin in der präklinischen Entwicklung in der Abteilung Globale Forschung und Entwicklung der Grünenthal GmbH und wurde 2009 zum International Preclinical Project Leader befördert. Dr. Pfaff ist Tierärztin und hat darüber hinaus einen Master-Abschluss in angewandter Toxikologie. Sie ist Fachtierärztin für Pathologie und anerkannte Eurotox-registrierte Toxikologin. Dr. Pfaff studierte an den Universitäten Gießen und Surrey, Guildford (UK).
